I am currently based out of Boulder, CO, where I live a wonderful ‘outdoorsy’ lifestyle: backpacking fly-fishing, mountain biking, and telemark skiing are a few of my favorite pursuits. You can often find me bashing about in the trees on my Mtn bike or skis; and sometimes on freelance photo and film projects, while still having a full time ‘real job’. I am always chasing the light in some way; often it really ‘gets’ me where it truly count....

I take my Canon digital SLR camera with me wherever I go, whether on a multi-day backpacking trip or a fall road trip, constantly experimenting with ideas, filters, unusual angles, compelling composition, and how to make the ‘perfect photo’ that best represents that scene or subject. It is an endless process full of wondrous and often challenging potential.

A more recent passion and pursuit of mine has become the world of documentary, social and adventure film-making:

Volunteering for Mountainfilm in Telluride in 2001 set me on a collision course with an new thirst for and a fascination with the inherent power of human stories and dramas made with moving pictures. This got me started with my own digital 3-chip camera, which then led to working as a professional wedding videographer and Final Cut Pro editor for 5 years+.

I have since then helped out several local filmmakers with their projects, shot and edited 10 or more weddings, produced a few of my own action videos and projects; and my ‘Dream Job’ is to be a film camera-man for the Discovery Channel, National Geographic television, the History Channel, etc.

(Know anybody in these companies or related ones? Contact Me!)

I have worked as a volunteer at 2 of Boulders film festivals, BIFF and BAFF (true story!) and I continue to find film festivals and their characters and the community surrounding them as some of my favorite things in this rich and varied life.

 A Somewhat Short Bio:

I am a native of Montana, and grew up in the mountains, valleys, and rivers of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. These definitive early years of tromping around in the mountains with my family were instrumental in bringing a profound recognition of the power inherent in nature, and along with this came a natural hunger to explore this natural world in many ways and document what I found there.

At Humboldt State University in Northern California, I took several photography courses: It had become more than just a hobby now, and I worked several classes into my college degree.

In 1992, I graduated with a BS in Natural Resources and Environmental Communications, which was a self created major that combined natural science core classes with an emphasis on a photography and journalism curriculum.

But wait, there’s a bit more:

In 1997, I entered into in a partnership with the Crested Butte Land Trust as a co-founder of the Crested Butte Scenic Calendar. In its first year, 1998, the calendar represented several Crested Butte photographers and was quite successful in raising money for the CBLT. This high quality fine art calendar continues to this day to raise much needed funds for the Crested Butte Land Trust, and to showcase emerging and seasoned regional photographers, as well as local poetry.

Over the course of this multi-year career, I have traveled and photographed in Alaska, New Zealand, Costa Rica, and all throughout the western US in hundreds of locations. I have taken an estimated 300,000 + images in my lifetime, and a significant number of those have come in just the past 4 years after I got my hands on a D-SLR.
Nearly 5 gigabytes of memory translates to anywhere from 200 to 20,000 photos; more than I used to take in 2 years when I shot film! I have taken up to 2900 images for one sporting event (with 7000 participants!) as a photographer for Myraceday.com.

My Vision/Mission:

I try and use my creative and technical background to record eye-catching and evocative images of the planets most amazing landscapes, peoples, and natural and sporting events, and I hope they are an ongoing inspiration to those who seek to find meaning in their world through the medium of photography.

I also hope that my (especially natural world) images evoke a strong sense of ‘place’ and spirit in people who view them, and that this will inspire them to go seek them out on their own and subsequently come to value them enough to create and/or find ways to protect them in a rapidly developing world.

You are invited to come and explore this world with me, and don’t forget: Always have your camera with you, no matter where you go, and take a lot of images. This is perhaps the best way to form your unique own vision: when you discover what inspires and motivates you by using your camera often, in various ways it will unfold for you.

I wish you the best in all your visions...
